Lazarus GYM 2025, Photography by Charlie Flint

The GYM is delivered over 3 levels:

Level 1 – Foundations
Who: Performers new to classical text, Lazarus Theatre Company’s text process or those further on in their careers who want to learn new skills, give time & space to their practice or stretch their acting muscles in new ways.

What: Here we share our Lazarus process; with our 'nothing is obvious' approach we share what performers should ask of the text from the outset,  how to practically break text down into manageable sections & how to get the text in the body as soon as possible.

Includes: Warm up, communication & connection exercises, God Questions, Thoughts & Parts of Thoughts, how to use Space, Musicality & Intention & the '6 points of Reference' in order to practically communicate what's on the page, in embodied, physical ways.

Using the Prologue Chorus from Shakespeare's Henry V

Level 2 – Ignite
Who: Performers who have completed Level 1 Foundations & ready to take it to the next level.

What: Building on discoveries from Level 1, here is all about 'exploring' rather than 'performing', we explore the text further and deeper, applying new dramaturgical exercises such as stresses, rhythms & rhymes. 'Ignite' allows us to take the time & space to play, test & explore the process working collaboratively with others & presenting the text back to the rest of the group.

Includes: Warm up, collaborative movement exercises, Pointing, Given Circumstances, Stage Directions, Entrances & Exits, Props, context signposts & 'AT, TO, WITH' communication tools

Level 3 – Deep Dive
Who: Performers who have completed Level 1 & 2 & ready to take it to the next level.

What: The third and final Level builds once again on discoveries from Level 1 & 2, but here we achieve 'Work Ready' status. Working as a rigorous, forensic and detailed company, collaboratively with others & performing the text back to the rest of the group.

Includes: vocal exercises, ensemble play, senses, literary tools, & character signposts; giving performers tools to be present & in the moment in performance.

And then - Reps

Who: Performers who have completed Level 1, 2 & 3 who want a regular workout exploring different classical texts each session, building their repertoire, stamina & community.

What: Each session takes a new piece of classical text, not only from Shakespeare but from across the Early Modern Cannon. These sessions are company led, exploring complex & demanding texts from some of the greatest plays of the period, practically.
